My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.
"Did Dad know where we lived?"

That night, I showed Mario the documents.
He reached for his phone. "I'm calling my mother."
I took it from his hand.
"Not yet."
"Carly, she bought your father's absence."
"And Dad sold it. I need to hear from him before Alison controls another version."
"I'm calling my mother."
Mario sat beside me. "What do you need?"
The newest letter in Alison's envelope included a phone number. Dad had written to tell her he planned to contact me himself.
"One honest conversation with my dad," I said.
That was why she'd come, not because guilt made her brave, but because she was losing control.
"What do you need?"

Dad agreed to meet me days later. We met at a quiet diner while Mario waited outside with Riley.
Dad stood when I entered.
"You look like your mom."
