My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.

Two years after my husband's family boycotted our wedding, his mother appeared at my home with an envelope and a request for secrecy. I expected another insult. Instead, she revealed a connection to the father who'd abandoned me, forcing me to question every story I'd been told about my childhood.

The spoon hit the kitchen floor just as someone knocked on my front door.

My 14-month-old daughter, Riley, laughed from her high chair.

"Again?" I asked.

The knock came three more times. My husband, Mario, had left for work less than ten minutes earlier, so I assumed he'd forgotten something.

I carried Riley with me and opened the door.

"Again?"

Mario's mother stood on my porch.

For two years, Alison had acted as though I didn't exist. Now she was clutching a thick brown envelope against her chest and staring at Riley as though she'd seen a ghost.

"What are you doing here?"

"I need five minutes, Carly."

"Mario's at work."

"What are you doing here?"

"I know. I came to the person I should've faced first."

That was new. Alison usually corrected other people until they apologized for her mistakes.

I shifted Riley higher on my hip. "You've had two years."

The last time we'd sat across from each other, Mario and I had been engaged.

Alison had spent dinner asking about my childhood in a tone that made every answer sound like a confession.
