This is the third year in a row that my husband has taken his whole family on vacation without me — this time, I didn't protest.

My husband slowly turned towards his mother.

The camera was set up above the TV, in the living room of the vacation home, almost a thousand miles away from me.

"Mom," he said. "What have you done?"

The sound was faint, but clear enough.

Carol stopped smiling.

Around the long dining table, all the members of his family fell silent.

Her sisters lowered their glasses.

His brother leaned forward.

Even his cousin's girlfriend — this woman who, somehow, had managed to be considered "close family" when I never had been — looked perplexed.

My husband, Mark, squeezed the phone harder against his ear.

"No," he said. "This account cannot be frozen."

My notary, Rebecca, was sitting opposite me.

"This is the first one," she said.

"The first what?"

" Account. "

She looked at her watch.

"The others should follow."

On camera, Mark stood up so quickly that his chair scraped the floor as it moved backward.

Carol grabbed his arm.

He broke free.

It was new.

For eight years, Mark had let his mother touch his arm, lower her voice, and make every conflict something I was responsible for.

Now he stared at her as if he had finally realized that she could hurt him too.

The second phone rang.

His brother's.

Then Carol's.

Then those of Mark's two sisters.

One after the other, they answered.

One after the other, their faces changed.

Rebecca closed the file placed in front of her.

"All six accounts are frozen."

I watched Carol get up from the table.

"What exactly did you deposit?" I asked.

Rebecca looked at me.

"What you authorized."

I knew that.

But still, hearing that answer made my chest tighten.

"A divorce petition. An emergency request to preserve marital assets. A civil fraud complaint against the family holding company. And a notice to the bank indicating that your signature had been forged on three loan guarantees."

On screen, Mark turned towards the camera.

He couldn't see me.

The camera was installed above our TV, nearly a thousand miles away, in that Florida resort.
