My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.

"You don't get to start with something easy."

He sat again. "I'm sorry, Carly."

"Did Alison force you to leave?"

"You look like your mom."

"No. She offered enough money for our family to move."

"So why didn't we?"

"I knew your mom wouldn't leave her job, your school, or the only support system she had. I told myself taking you away would punish you for my problems."

"You didn't ask us."

"No."

"You didn't ask us."

"You asked whether you could leave alone."

His eyes dropped. "Yes."

"And called that protection?"

"At the time."

"What was Alison protecting?"

Dad leaned closer.

"At the time."

"I found records showing her family had billed clients for better materials than they used. I refused to approve another job, and they settled the dispute."

"Then Alison paid you separately."

"Yes. She had approved some of those decisions and feared I might speak."

I held his gaze. "You took the money and never came back."

"I told myself I'd return once I was stable. Then every year made me more ashamed."
