My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.

"I thought he left because of me."

Mom's hand dropped.

"He wrote to you?"

"He asked her to give it to me when I was older."

"Did you read it?"

"Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because I needed to know who else had been deciding what I could handle."

"He wrote to you?"

Mom looked down. "I'm sorry."

I let the silence sit before asking, "Did Dad know where we lived?"

"For the first few years, yes. But then I didn't write to him and tell him we'd moved again."

That answer closed the last gap.

Alison had offered him the exit.

Dad had chosen it again every year he stayed away.
