My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.
"Did you know?"
Mom sat down.
For several seconds, the only sound came from Riley pulling socks out of the basket.
"He sent me a check a few weeks after he disappeared," Mom said. "I didn't know where the money came from. The note only said leaving would give us a better life."
"And you never told me?"
"I mailed it back. I thought knowing he'd taken money would make you believe you weren't worth choosing."
"And you never told me?"
"It hurt anyway, Mom. I blamed myself because nobody gave me anything else to blame."
Her eyes filled.
"I wanted you to hate an empty chair instead of yourself. I thought he left because of me."
"I did hate myself. I just learned not to say it."
Mom reached across the table, but I pulled the second document from my bag.
"There's more. Dad gave Alison a letter for me before he left. She kept it."
