"She said she offered Dad enough money to move all three of us away. Apparently, he worked for their family, and he uncovered some dirty laundry."

Mom's face tightened.

"Did you know?"

"Alison said he refused because he didn't want to uproot us."

Mom gave a bitter laugh.

"That sounds like Calvin. He'd make a choice for everyone, then call it protection."

"He asked whether he could take the money and leave alone. He was supposed to send some of the money to you."
