I cleaned at the same hotel for 18 years – Three days after I was fired, a lawyer called me and told me to sit down

"Where were you, Julian?"

"That's none of your business."

"It concerned him. And he took note of it."

Something then flickered in her eyes, a brief glimmer of uncertainty.

But he quickly concealed it.

"Fifteen thousand. That's my final offer. Accept it before I make your life very difficult."

I looked at it and thought of my grandson, the bills piled on my kitchen table, all those years when I bowed my head to thank guys like Julian for giving me a few crumbs.

"This is my final offer. Accept it before I make your life very difficult."

"I want a formal meeting," I told him. "At Nathaniel's office. Bring your lawyers. Bring whoever you want."

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

He expected me to be scared.

He expected me to give in, as people like me are supposed to do.

"You'll regret it," he said. "I'll make sure of it."
