Vipers and heatwaves: when these reptiles prefer your living room to nature
Official statistics remain incomplete, but sightings are becoming increasingly frequent. Over the past five years, the French Office for Biodiversity has recorded more than 400 reports of vipers entering private homes across the country.
The main cause? Climate change. When temperatures exceed 32°C, some species, like the asp viper, abandon their natural habitat, which has become too arid. Their survival instinct then leads them to cooler, more humid places… even if it means ending up in your living room.
Why your sofa becomes an ideal refuge
Surprisingly, your sofa can become the preferred vacation spot for these reptiles. The reason is simple: it combines all the characteristics of a perfect shelter – relative coolness, darkness, and guaranteed tranquility.
Often placed on tiled flooring (naturally cooler), rarely moved, and sometimes located near a half-open window or houseplants, it creates a stable and temperate microclimate . Some vipers can thus hide there for several days without being detected.
