She remained standing.
“I will say this once,” Margaret began. “Elena did not take anything from you. I removed privileges you mistook for rights.”
Richard opened his folder.
“Mother, the family has concerns about undue influence.”
Margaret smiled coldly.
“Samuel, please.”
The attorney pushed a packet across the table.
“Mrs. Whitmore completed two independent cognitive evaluations before changing the trust. Both confirm full capacity. The signing was recorded, and the previous documents gave her complete authority to alter distribution rules.”
Richard closed his mouth.
Margaret turned toward Vanessa.
“You built a social life around my name, my house, and my money. Then you used those things to humiliate a child.”
Vanessa’s eyes shone with either tears or anger.
“I made a mistake,” she said.
“No,” Margaret answered. “A mistake is sending the wrong invitation. What you did required several decisions. You saw an empty chair and chose the trash. You heard children mock a nurse and chose silence. You watched a seven-year-old cry and chose your image.”
The room fell still.
Elena felt Daniel cover her hand beneath the table.
Vanessa looked toward Mia, who sat between her parents with a sketchbook because Margaret had insisted she was welcome wherever her name was being discussed.
