“I’m sorry,” Vanessa said.
Mia looked up.
“Are you sorry because Great-Grandma changed the money?”
The question struck harder than any accusation.
Vanessa’s face reddened.
“No.”
Mia tilted her head.
“Then why didn’t you say it before?”
No one stepped in to rescue Vanessa.
Her polished voice finally failed.
“Because I was embarrassed.”
Mia nodded slowly.
“I was embarrassed too.”
Elena’s throat tightened.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I am sorry I made you sit there. I am sorry I let people laugh. I am sorry I spoke about your mother like her work made her less important.”
It was not perfect.
It did not erase the party.
But it was the first thing Vanessa had said that sounded less like strategy and more like truth.
Margaret finally sat.
