Under the new terms, Elena reviewed the documents at her kitchen table after working a twelve-hour shift. She still wore her scrubs, and Mia’s homework covered the space beside her.
Daniel watched her reading.
“You don’t have to handle this tonight.”
“Yes, I do.”
The request included imported marble, custom wine storage, and a pool pavilion.
Elena typed a brief reply.
*Denied. The request does not meet standards of need, contribution, or responsible stewardship.*
Daniel read it and smiled faintly.
“That will cause a storm.”
Elena pressed send.
“Then they should bring an umbrella.”
The storm arrived quickly.
Richard claimed Daniel was controlled by his wife.
Vanessa accused Elena of punishing them out of insecurity.
One cousin suggested Margaret had been manipulated because of her age.
Margaret responded by inviting every adult family member to a formal meeting at her estate in Newport, Rhode Island.
Elena did not want to attend.
Daniel insisted they go together.
The meeting took place in Margaret’s library, a room lined with dark wood, tall windows, and books that appeared to have actually been read.
Samuel Price sat at the long table with legal documents stacked before him.
Vanessa arrived wearing cream silk, looking expensive and wounded.
Richard brought a folder filled with objections.
Several cousins whispered near the fireplace until Margaret entered.
