At my cousin’s birthday party, my seven-year-old daughter was mocked for being “poor” and for having a “lowly nurse” as her mother. They made her sit beside the garbage while the adults watched and laughed. Then my husband’s wealthy grandmother discovered what happened and made one announcement that erased every smile in the backyard.
The first thing Mia Callahan noticed about the folding chair beside the kitchen trash was the smell of sour lemonade and discarded paper plates.
She was seven years old and small for her age, dressed in the blue outfit her mother had ironed twice that morning. Elena Callahan had carefully pinned a silver butterfly clip into her daughter’s curls before saying, “You look beautiful, sweetheart. Have fun with your cousins.”
Mia had tried.
Her cousin Parker’s birthday party transformed the Whitmore backyard into something from a magazine. Balloon arches framed the patio, rented ponies circled the lawn, and the dessert table had been built to resemble a castle.
Children in designer shoes ran between games, screaming over gold-dusted cupcakes and expensive party favors.
Mia stood near the patio holding the small wrapped gift she and Elena had selected from a clearance shelf at Target.
Parker’s older sister, Sloane, looked at the package and smirked.
“Is that from the dollar store?”
“It’s a dinosaur puzzle,” Mia said softly. “Parker likes dinosaurs.”
“My dad bought him a real fossil kit,” another child replied. “That’s baby stuff.”
Then the adults began paying attention.
Mia’s aunt Vanessa Whitmore approached in white linen trousers, diamonds flashing beneath the sunlight. Her gaze moved from Mia’s simple dress to Elena’s plain nursing shoes.
