PART 2 — The Moment They Realized The Man They Mocked Owned Their Future
Neither Vanessa nor Mason noticed Ethan listening.
That was their first mistake.
They had spent the entire evening convinced they were watching Claire make the biggest mistake of her life.
They never considered that Claire might have married someone who was watching them make theirs.
The garden slowly emptied as guests collected their coats and whispered behind polite smiles. The wedding had been small by design. No newspaper announcements. No luxury ballroom. No celebrity photographer.
Exactly how Ethan wanted it.
Vanessa had called it embarrassing.
Mason had called it proof that Claire had “settled.”
Their father had not said much at all.
That somehow hurt Claire more than the insults.
Because silence from him had always meant agreement.
For years, Claire had been the daughter who handled problems.
When their mother needed help paying medical bills, Claire was called.
When Mason lost money on another failed business idea, Claire was asked to “be understanding.”
When relatives praised Mason for being ambitious, nobody mentioned that Claire had spent her twenties working two jobs while putting herself through law school.
She had learned early that being responsible did not make people appreciate you.
Sometimes it only made them comfortable using you.
And tonight, standing beside Ethan in her simple wedding dress, she had expected the same treatment.
What she had not expected was Ethan squeezing her hand beneath the table.
“You okay?” he whispered.
Claire looked at him.
The man everyone pitied.
The man everyone assumed needed saving.
The man who had spent the entire evening smiling while people insulted him.
“I’m fine.”
Ethan studied her expression.
“No.”
She smiled slightly.
“You always do that.”
“Do what?”
“Know when I’m lying.”
He smiled.
“Occupational hazard.”
Claire laughed softly.
That was one of the things she loved about him.
Ethan never treated her like someone fragile.
He never rescued her.
He stood beside her.
There was a difference.
Across the room, Mason was still talking.
Loudly.
As usual.
“I’m telling you,” Mason said to a group of guests, “the technology sector is about to explode. I’m getting involved with a company connected to Vale Meridian.”
Vanessa immediately looked impressed.
“Really?”
Mason nodded confidently.
“I have connections.”
Claire almost smiled.
Because she knew Mason.
He had always confused knowing someone’s name with having power.
Ethan glanced toward him.
“Interesting.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
“Your brother.”
“What about him?”
“He mentioned my company.”
She sighed.
“Unfortunately, he does that often.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“You never told me?”
Claire shrugged.
“He likes pretending he’s closer to success than he actually is.”
Before Ethan could respond, his phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
The change in his expression was subtle.
Almost invisible.
But Claire noticed.
“What happened?”
“My assistant.”
“Is something wrong?”
Ethan hesitated.
Then looked across the room.
“Maybe.”
Claire followed his eyes.
Mason was standing beside Vanessa, showing people something on his phone.
“He’s been making calls using my company’s name.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
Ethan unlocked his phone.
On the screen was an email.
A legal department notification.
Unauthorized representation of Vale Meridian interests detected.
Claire stared.
“What does that mean?”
