**THE BABY’S HEARTBEAT WAS DROPPING… BUT THE OPERATING ROOM WAS NEVER CALLED**

PART 2 — The Name They Erased Became the Name They Needed

The first time I saw the name Carter again after five years, I thought it was a mistake.

I was sitting in my office on the twenty-third floor of Vale Analytics in Boston, reviewing a merger report that had taken my team nearly four months to complete.

My coffee had gone cold.

My phone was buried beneath a stack of documents.

And for the first time in years, my life felt like it belonged entirely to me.

No one was asking me to apologize.

No one was comparing me to Mason.

No one was reminding me that I was the “difficult” child because I wanted basic respect.

I had spent five years building Emily Vale from the ground up.

Not because Emily Carter was someone I hated.

But because Emily Carter was the girl who had waited outside graduation hoping someone would show up.

Emily Carter was the girl who checked her phone every few minutes during family events, convincing herself that maybe her parents were running late.

Emily Carter was the girl who believed if she achieved enough, worked hard enough, became impressive enough, her family would finally look at her the way they looked at Mason.

Emily Vale was different.

She did not wait for anyone to choose her.

She chose herself.

My assistant, Natalie, knocked lightly before entering.

“Emily?”

I looked up.

She was holding a thin folder.

“You asked me to flag anything requiring your immediate attention.”

I nodded.

“What is it?”

She placed the folder on my desk.

“This came through legal.”

I opened it casually.

Then I saw the first page.

My breathing stopped.

CARTER FAMILY HOLDINGS — BENEFICIARY REVIEW

I stared at the document.

Five years.

Five years of silence.

Five years of blocked numbers, unanswered messages, and relatives who only remembered I existed when they needed something.

And suddenly, my old family name was sitting in front of me.

I flipped the page.

The next line made my hands go cold.

Primary beneficiary: Emily Carter.

Not Emily Vale.

Emily Carter.

The name I had legally buried.

The name my family had ignored.

The name attached to something they apparently needed me to claim.

“What is this?” I whispered.

Natalie hesitated.

“Apparently, your legal department received notice from a trust attorney.”

“From who?”

She looked down.

“The Carter estate.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because the irony was too perfect.

My family had spent my entire life acting like I was an unwanted responsibility.

Now, five years later, they were using the name they had discarded to find me.
