“It means someone has been telling investors they represent my company.”
“Your company?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Our company.”
That single word made her chest tighten.
Not because of the money.
Because Ethan had always included her.
Even before they were married.
Even before he told the world who he really was.
Claire looked back at Mason.
“What did he do?”
Ethan’s face remained calm.
“Not enough to hurt the company.”
A pause.
“But enough to expose himself.”
Thirty minutes later, Claire and Ethan prepared to leave.
Vanessa appeared beside them one last time.
She looked at Ethan’s wheelchair.
Then at Claire.
“I hope you’re ready for what comes next.”
Claire smiled politely.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You know marriage isn’t just about feelings.”
Claire almost laughed.
Coming from Vanessa, the words were almost impressive.
“And what exactly do you think this marriage is about?”
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“Reality.”
Then she walked away.
Claire watched her disappear.
“She really believes she won,” Ethan said.
Claire looked at him.
“Why aren’t you angry?”
“I am.”
“You don’t look angry.”
Ethan smiled slightly.
“Anger is expensive. I prefer information.”
Before Claire could answer, a black sedan stopped outside the hotel entrance.
Then another.
Then another.
The valet immediately stood straighter.
Several people near the entrance stopped talking.
Claire looked confused.
“What’s happening?”
Ethan adjusted his jacket.
“Work.”
The first person to step out was not a driver.
It was a woman in a dark suit carrying a tablet.
She walked directly toward Ethan.
“Mr. Vale.”
Claire froze.
Not because of the name.
Because of the way everyone reacted.
The hotel manager rushed forward.
“Mr. Vale, we had no idea you were attending tonight.”
Ethan simply nodded.
“You weren’t supposed to.”
The manager immediately understood.
