My grandfather, who is 76 years old, sewed blankets and sold them at the flea market so I could walk again – Then a motorcyclist arrived and said to me, "I've been looking for you for 20 years."

Later, Cole offered to pay for all my therapy sessions.

I closed my notebook. "I am not a bill you can pay to prove you're my father."

"So tell me how I can help you."

"I loved Maisie."

I showed Cole the sketches I had made for shorter covers, with easy-access pockets.

"These wouldn't get caught in the wheels of the wheelchair," I said. "The straps would also prevent them from slipping."

He examined the page. "Did you draw these?"

"During study hours."

Grandfather leaned towards me. "I could make one as a sample."

"Just one," I replied. "Not twenty before breakfast."

"Did you draw this?"

Cole tapped the list under my drawing.

"I can pay for the first batch of supplies and sell the finished quilts at weekend markets. No strings attached."

"I'm going to track every dollar," I said.
