My stepdaughter arrived at my second wedding in a wedding dress to steal the show – but what my daughter did made her shout, "You had no right!"

I thought nothing could ruin my second wedding… until my stepdaughter walked in wearing a white, pearl-embroidered wedding dress. I begged my daughter not to make a scene. She just smiled and whispered, “Enjoy the ceremony, Mom. I’ll take care of the reception.” What she did next shattered my family.

I stood at the back of the chapel, my arm around my daughter's.

I had never felt so light in my entire life.

Thomas was waiting for me at the end of the aisle, and for once, I felt no pain.

Not that old pain I still carried from a marriage that had taken more from me than it had given me.

Just Thomas, the sunlight filtering through the stained-glass windows, and Maya's arm, so firm beneath mine.

"Are you ready, Mom?" she asked me.
