My grandfather, who is 76 years old, sewed blankets and sold them at the flea market so I could walk again – Then a motorcyclist arrived and said to me, "I've been looking for you for 20 years."

"That's right."

I let him attend a therapy session. When he moved forward as I reached for the bars, I said, "No."

He stopped immediately. Grandfather stayed back. He already knew the rule.

I stood there for seven seconds. Cole didn't applaud or say I was brave.

"You did a good job," he said.

"Correct answer."

He already knew the rule.

The following Saturday, I made grandpa go back to the flea market.

"You lied here," I told him. "This is where you'll make up for it."

He approached the vendors, his hands trembling.

"Cole didn't abandon Hannah. I hid her letters, and after her death, I told her that her baby had died too."

A woman next to him stared at him. "You told us he disappeared when he learned your daughter was pregnant."

"I lied."

"You lied here."

Grandfather didn't talk about raising me, doing double shifts, or making those quilts.

"I loved Maisie," he said. "I also built that love on a lie. One doesn't erase the other."

That's when I realized he had finally understood.
