I made my prom dress from my late father's old uniform - but what I found hidden in the fabric shocked me.

"Chris never believed me."

Finally, he murmured, "Chris was never able to finish it."

My heart skipped a beat.

"What do you mean?"

Glen pressed his thumb against the paper.

"He finished the letter." Her voice broke. "He was never able to do what was asked of him."

I sat down opposite him.

"He was never able to do what was asked of him."

Glen looked at the photo.

"Do you know what happened two weeks before his death?"

I shook my head.

"He called me."

The words came out slowly.

"We'd had an exhausting week. I told him I was going home, heating up some soup, and sleeping twelve hours." Glen swallowed. "He said, 'You're lying about two of those things.'"

"Do you know what happened two weeks before his death?"

I smiled despite myself.

"He knew you."

"Better than I knew myself." Glen looked back at the letter. "He made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would stay by your and Ellen's side."

"You did it."
