I cleaned at the same hotel for 18 years – Three days after I was fired, a lawyer called me and told me to sit down

"So that you'll remember this place, Marta. No matter what happens."

The phone rang.

Guessing what I couldn't say.

I let it ring three times before answering.

" Hello ? "

"Is that Marta?"

" Yes. "

"My name is Nathaniel. I was Mr. Whitaker's lawyer. Before we continue, I'd like you to sit down."

My heart was beating so fast that I barely heard him ask if there was anyone else in the room.

"Before we continue, I'd like you to sit down."

I slowly let myself fall back onto the kitchen chair.

My eyes were fixed on the framed photograph that shone in the light from the window.

“Mr. Whitaker updated his will four months before his death,” Nathaniel continued. “He left you his entire estate: the house, the land, and a trust fund to finance your grandson’s education.”

I gripped the edge of the table to stabilize myself.

"That can't be true," I murmured. "Julian said the house was his."

"That can't be true."

"Julian was disinherited. Your former employer documented years of neglect and pressure from his son. I have the documents here in my office."

I took the framed photo while he was talking.

My fingers followed the outline of the wooden frame.

I felt something loose under my thumb.

A slight play in the background that I had never noticed before.
