Nighttime sensations that are often attributed to something else
A sudden hunger pang or palpitations in the middle of the night may seem harmless. In reality, they often indicate hypoglycemia: the body is urgently seeking energy and interrupts sleep to signal the problem.
Restless legs, tingling, or a feeling of discomfort in the lower limbs can be linked to diabetic neuropathy. Nerves affected by prolonged high blood sugar levels send disruptive signals that prevent rest.
Snoring and pauses in breathing during sleep should also be taken seriously. Sleep apnea is common in people with type 2 diabetes, and the vicious cycle is real: the less well you sleep, the harder it is to regulate your blood sugar.
