His smile disappeared.

"We were here. At this lake."

My chest tightened.

"Derrick... what happened?"

He looked down at the little horse in his hand.

"My grandparents asked me to keep an eye on her while everyone got dinner ready."

"I told her I'd be right back."

I already knew what came next.

"I was gone five minutes. I wanted another soda."

"When I came back..."

His voice broke.

"...she wasn't on the dock anymore."

The room was silent.

"I found her life jacket."

He swallowed hard.

"It was still hanging on the hook."

I felt tears filling my own eyes.

"The search lasted three hours."

He stared out the window toward the lake.

"They found her just after sunset."

Neither of us spoke.

"I was supposed to be watching her. I still hear her asking if she could go down to the dock."

For ten years...

Those words had never stopped haunting him.

I finally stepped closer.

"Derrick."

He shook his head.

"No. You don't understand. I killed her."

"No. You left for five minutes."

"I shouldn't have."
