"I'll accept your apology now," he said softly.

"Your apology," Grandpa repeated. "To my granddaughter. I'll accept it on her behalf."

"I'm sure I don't know what you mean, sir. I was making a toast."

"Your apology," Grandpa repeated.

"You were making a mark," Grandpa said. "There's a difference."

Harrison shifted in his chair.

I saw his jaw work.

Margot set the microphone down slowly, as if arranging a weapon within reach.

"With all due respect," she said, and every word had a little hook in it, "I won't apologize for telling the truth. Don't you country bumpkins respect honesty?"
