A woman at the next table quietly stopped chewing.

Margot had gone the color of old paper.

"That is not," she began, "that is a business conversation, that has nothing to do with—"

"It has everything to do with it," Grandpa said. "Like you yourself said, Harrison, who needs four hundred acres for a wellness center? Tonight, you confirmed every suspicion I already had about that offer."

Then he said something that sent gasps rippling through the room.

Harrison stood up too fast.

His glass tipped and rolled off the table.

"I have nothing more to say to you, sir," Grandpa said mildly. "The paperwork has been on my kitchen table for a week. I haven't signed anything."

Grandpa turned to me then.

His eyes softened.
