My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.

"Securing the truth."

"You can't keep those."

"What are you doing?"

"Don't touch them."

"Carly, let me explain this to Mario first."

"No."

"He's my son."

"And he's my husband."

Riley began to fuss.

"He's my son."

I lifted her from the high chair. She pressed her cheek against my neck and grabbed my shirt with one small fist.

There wasn't enough money in the world to make me walk away from her, not for a week and not for 20 years.

I looked at Alison over Riley's shoulder.

"You watched me hold your granddaughter and still asked me to protect you."

Alison opened her mouth.

I pointed to the door.

I lifted her from the high chair.

"I'm going to verify every word you said."
