My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.

"And sorry, but you don't get to hold my daughter."

I stepped aside.

She entered slowly, studying the photographs of the family we had built without her.

I placed Riley in her high chair and handed her another spoon.

Alison set the envelope on the kitchen table but kept her palm over it.

"Before I show you what's inside, promise you won't tell Mario the real reason I opposed your marriage."

I folded my arms.

"You came here while my husband was at work to ask me to lie to him?"

Alison set the envelope on the kitchen table

"If he learns this, I'll lose him forever."

"You lost him when you left our wedding row empty. Stop circling it and tell me what you did."

The color drained from her face. Alison sat down.

I stayed standing.

"My family hired your father years ago," she said. "He supervised renovation work for us."

My dad.

"If he learns this, I'll lose him forever."

The words turned me into a little girl waiting beside a window. I remembered his laugh and the morning he disappeared.

"What does my dad have to do with you?"

"He found problems in some of the work records. Materials had been changed. Clients were billed for things they didn't always receive."

"So he confronted your family."

"He found problems in some of the work records."

"Yes."

"And you paid him to stay quiet?"

"We settled the business dispute."
