My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because I was "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" for their son — two years later, his mother arrived at my house with ONE REQUEST that made me BREAK DOWN.
Then I faced Alison.
"Why did my wedding scare you?"
Her mouth tightened.
"Why did my wedding scare you?"
Mario spoke before she could dodge. "Tell her."
Alison looked around the table and finally stopped searching for an ally.
"I knew Calvin might return for Carly's wedding," she said. "If he saw our family again, he could expose what he'd found in the old work records."
"So you called Carly a gold digger," Mario's sister said.
"I thought they were young," Alison replied. "I believed they'd separate and find other people."
"Tell her."
Mario stared at her. "You didn't care that we loved each other?"
"I cared more about keeping the past buried."
The room went silent.
I leaned toward her. "You didn't boycott our wedding because I wasn't good enough. You were afraid my father might walk through the door and tell everyone who you were."
Alison's eyes filled.
"You didn't care that we loved each other?"
"Yes."
Mom's voice shook. "Then every insult toward my daughter was punishment for a secret she didn't even know."
Alison looked at me. "Every time I saw Carly, I remembered what I'd done."
