My grandfather, who is 76 years old, sewed blankets and sold them at the flea market so I could walk again – Then a motorcyclist arrived and said to me, "I've been looking for you for 20 years."
But no.
I looked at Cole. "You mean I'm your daughter?"
"I'm saying Hannah believed you were. I want proof too."
"He has no right to erase you."
Grandfather reached out towards my chair.
I pushed his hand away sharply.
"Stop bothering me as soon as my questions displease you."
"We should talk about this at home, Maisie. Come on, darling."
"No. You'll explain everything to me there, and I won't have any way of knowing what's missing."
Cole nodded once. "She's right."
I pushed his hand away with a sharp gesture.
I spread all the pages out on the table.
"Tessa, take some pictures."
Grandfather stepped forward. "She won't do anything like that."
Tessa froze.
I turned to her. "You said you'd stop disappearing when things got difficult."
She took out her phone.
