My grandfather, who is 76 years old, sewed blankets and sold them at the flea market so I could walk again – Then a motorcyclist arrived and said to me, "I've been looking for you for 20 years."
"Did he hurt her?"
"So you weren't protecting her. You were making decisions for her, grandpa."
His face tightened.
"He had no future."
"It was Mom's decision, not yours."
"She was 18 years old."
"Yes, but she was still my daughter."
"He had no future."
"And I'm still your granddaughter. Does that mean you can choose for me too?"
His shoulders slumped.
Tessa glanced at me.
I nodded towards the corridor.
"Give us a minute."
She went outside and almost closed the door.
Grandfather sat down next to the box.
