If you're using empty water bottles, don't just fill them with tap water. There's a specific formula to maximize freezing time. The secret is to add ordinary table salt to the water before freezing it, a principle similar to that used in old-fashioned ice cream makers.
Use approximately 3 to 4 tablespoons of salt for every 250 ml of water. This salty mixture allows the ice to melt much more slowly. You may need to lower your freezer temperature slightly and wait a little longer for the block to freeze completely (check by squeezing the bottle to ensure it's rock hard), but this step guarantees extended freshness once the system is running.
Method 1: Installation on a standard fan
If you have a desk or pedestal fan, the goal is to attach your cooling agents to the back of the device. The warm air will then be drawn through the ice before being propelled forward.
Take a paperclip and bend it slightly, or use a cable tie attached to a picture hanger. Secure this improvised hook around the back grille of the fan, then hang your ice packs or small bottles of frozen salt water from it.
Golden rule: Don't overload the back of the fan. Two blocks of ice are more than enough for a standard model. If you completely block the back, you'll restrict airflow, reducing cooling efficiency and potentially causing the motor to overheat. Also, be careful not to place the ice too close to the motor housing to prevent moisture from getting in.
Method 2: Installation on a large box fan.
For maximum cooling time, ranging from 8 to 12 hours continuously, a large box fan is the ideal device. It's the perfect solution for cooling a bedroom all night, a small living room, or for coping with a prolonged power outage.
