My teenage daughter's stepfather regularly took her out for ice cream late at night – When I watched the dashcam footage, I had to sit down

Vivian returned, quieter than usual.

I thought to myself that I was being ridiculous.

Vivian maintained her good grades and acted as normally as any other teenager. Logically, I had no reason to worry, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Mike always turns on the dashcam when he drives. He says it's to have evidence in case of an accident. For insurance reasons.

One evening, after everyone had fallen asleep, I slipped outside and took the memory card.

I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

My hands were shaking the whole time.

I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop, the house being silent around me.

I thought I was being paranoid.

Then the video loaded.

At first, it looked ordinary, just the dull light of streetlights sliding across the windshield, an almost empty road, and Mike's arm moving slightly as he held the steering wheel.

I thought I was being paranoid.

Vivian was there only in fragments: the glint of a hoodie in the reflection of the windshield as she moved, the faint outline of her shoulder as they passed under a brighter light.

They did not approach the gas station.

The car turned into a side street that I recognized but couldn't immediately place. It was lined with old brick buildings and closed shop windows.

Mike parked.

They did not approach the gas station.

The camera continued rolling as he got out, walked around the front of the car, and opened the passenger door just outside the frame. A shadow moved, then Vivian appeared, her back to the camera.

They walk together towards a door located at the edge of the frame.

There was a sign outside... I paused the video to look at it.

A slender figure dominated the panel, breaking through the indistinct text surrounding it. It looked like a woman, her back hunched, her arms raised.
