My teenage daughter's stepfather regularly took her out for ice cream late at night – When I watched the dashcam footage, I had to sit down
I sat Vivian down at the kitchen table to tell her the news.
When our son was born, Vivian started calling him "dad".
It happened just like that, like good things sometimes do when you don't force them.
She's 16 now. She's not a pretty little girl anymore.
She is intelligent and motivated. The kind of child that teachers set aside to talk about her "potential".
And something started to change in our home. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it, but I realized that Mike was partly responsible for the fact that I felt something was different in our house.
In particular, the way he treated Vivian.
I felt that something was different in our house.
I first noticed it when I came home from a parent-teacher meeting with some amazing news.
"They're recommending aptitude tests at all levels," I told Mike. "Chemistry, English, maybe advanced calculus. Isn't that wonderful?"
Mike nodded. "Yes... but it's a lot of work."
"She can do it. That's what matters."
Vivian spread her homework out on the dining table every night.
She had a system for organizing her books and a neat row of highlighters to coordinate the colors of her notes.
I came home from a parent-teacher meeting with some surprising news.
I was so proud of her.
But while I was helping him study and plan, Mike interrupted.
It seemed innocent — asking her if she wanted a snack or a break — but no matter how many times she said she was fine, he persisted.
"I just want to finish," she said, her nose in her books while Mike prowled around her.
I didn't say anything. It didn't seem necessary. University was still two years away, but we were preparing for it. Vivian was focused, and I was convinced my daughter would succeed.
Then the outings to eat ice cream began.
