"I should've gone to Daniel."
Instead, I whispered, "I laughed."
Leo lowered his eyes.
"It wasn't a big laugh. It wasn't loud. It lasted maybe two seconds. But Daniel heard it."
I closed my eyes.
"I watched his smile disappear."
"He looked at me."
"Not angry or confused. Just... hurt."
The kitchen fell silent.
"Without saying a word, he turned and walked away."

My voice broke.
"I never forgot the way his shoulders looked. They weren't slumped. They weren't angry. They just looked... smaller."
Leo stared at the table.
"What happened after that?"
"I went looking for him on Monday."
"He wasn't at school."
"Neither was Tuesday."
"Or Wednesday."
