My mother found this object in my father's drawer… Is it what I fear?

The shame of silence

*“I didn’t want you to worry. I didn’t want to seem weak.”*

How many people carry those exact words within them, without ever daring to say them? Her father had been battling depression for years. In secret. Alone. For fear of being a burden to his family.

It's a reality many know all too well—a relative, a friend, a colleague who smiles on the surface but crumbles in silence. Mental health still too often remains a taboo subject, one that's literally tucked away in a drawer.

But that night, during that conversation, something broke. Shame. Loneliness. The secret.

Talk, really talk

She didn't downplay it. She didn't offer unsolicited advice. She just… listened. Asked questions gently. Held his hand.

"You don't need to fight this alone anymore. We'll get through this together."

Sometimes that's all someone needs: to no longer feel alone with what they're carrying. Her father started seeing his therapist regularly again. He became more open, more present. Depression doesn't disappear overnight—no one claims otherwise—but the path becomes less dark when you're no longer walking it alone.
