My grandmother raised me alone after I became an orphan – three days after her death, I learned that she had lied to me my whole life.
"At school, everyone drives."
My grandmother was sitting at the kitchen table, sorting through bills. Her reading glasses were perched on the end of her nose. Her favorite mug, chipped on the rim and with fading flowers, sat beside her.
"Grandmother"
"Mm?" she replied.
"I think I need a car."
"The car can wait."
She sniffed. "You think you need a car."
"Yes," I replied. "Everyone drives to school. I always have to ask someone for a ride. I could get a job if I had one. I could help out."
This last remark made him think.
She put down her pen and looked at me.
"You'll help," she said. "But there are other ways. The car can wait."
