Martha shrugged. "I've missed enough already, Mom."

Dr. Collins quietly looked around the room. "This," he said, "is why we never erase these walls."

He turned toward me. "Medicine helped heal Martha's body." A beat passed before he could go on. "But every person in this room wanted to protect the little girl inside it."

Nobody spoke.

There wasn't anything left to say.
