If the tick is crawling freely and has not attached to anyone, place it in a sealed container or wrap it securely in tape before disposing of it. Some people choose to save the tick in a sealed bag or container in case identification becomes necessary later. After removing the tick, disinfect any surfaces where it was found and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, even if you wore gloves during the process.
Take a few moments to inspect your home for additional ticks. Check areas where pets spend time, along with rugs, carpets, pet bedding, furniture, and entryways. Vacuum floors, corners, and upholstered furniture carefully, then empty the vacuum container or dispose of the vacuum bag outside. Wash pet bedding, blankets, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry them on high heat when appropriate, as heat can help eliminate any ticks that may have been brought indoors.
