I paid for formula for a struggling mother of three – The next day, a soldier knocked on my door
"Were you at the grocery store yesterday? Around 3:00 PM?"
"Yes, why? Did something happen?"
He exhaled, and his expression softened. "My name is Mason. I'm Allison's husband. I just got back this morning after being deployed."
A man in military uniform was standing under my porch.
I blinked. "Your wife?"
"Yes. She told me what you did. What those people told her. And what you did for us."
We sat down at my kitchen table, and Mason took off his cap.
“I didn’t know,” he began. “I didn’t know how much worse things had gotten while I was gone.”
I waited.
"I didn't realize how much worse things had gotten while I was away."
"Allison had two jobs. She cleaned offices at night and worked as a janitor during the day. Her mother... she's older, but she helps her. She looks after the children while Allison works. She didn't tell me because she didn't want me to worry."
"She didn't tell me she was behind on the rent. That the bills were piling up."
My heart sank.
"She didn't tell me anything because she didn't want me to worry."
"Yesterday, she told me everything," Mason continued. "Then she told me about the grocery store."
"I only paid for the formula..."
"You did more than that. You reminded her that she wasn't invisible. That someone could see her."
We sat in silence for a long time.
"How did you find me?" I finally asked.
