I met my husband in high school. He was my first love. We were in our final year, preparing for our university visits and talking about the future.
My mother was silent, tears were streaming down her face.
I packed our suitcases, mine and our son's. Clothes. Important documents. His favorite stuffed dinosaur.
Our son was at a friend's house.
During the journey, I rehearsed what I was going to say to him. "Hey, son, we're going to stay at your grandparents' house for a while."
He had never met them.
When I returned with the suitcase, my husband looked devastated. My mother was silent, tears streaming down her face.
I placed the suitcase near the door.
He was excited in the way only children can be.
"I loved you," I told him. "More than was reasonable. I abandoned my family, my future, my studies. I never regretted it. Not once. Because I thought you were honest with me."
"I love you," he whispered, his throat tight.
"Love without truth is nothing."
I left. I took our son.
I told him we were going to spend the night at grandpa and grandma's.
They apologized.
He was excited in the way only children can be.
My parents opened the door, saw him, and collapsed. My mother began to sob. My father gripped the doorframe as if he needed it to stay upright.
They apologized.
For cutting me off. For remaining silent.
Never having met their grandson.
