After my mother died, I found a photo album from my childhood – in one of the photos, a girl was standing next to me, she looked exactly like me
As soon as she saw it, her hand flew to her mouth.
"Oh," she murmured. "I was dreading this day."
She looked up at me, tears flowing freely down her face.
"I'm so sorry. I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
"Who is she? And why have I never heard her name?"
Margaret closed her eyes. Then she nodded towards the kitchen.
"Sit down," she said gently. "You deserve to know everything."
"I was afraid this day would come."
We walked silently to the kitchen table. She took a deep breath, carefully folded the photo, and placed it on the table between us.
"What I'm about to tell you is something your mother spent her whole life trying to bury. Not because she didn't love you, but because the truth hurt her too much to live with."
