"Keep looking, Mason."
"I helped you measure the walls for shelves."
"People change their minds," Mason said.
"Honest people say so."

The appointment cards came next.
Misha leaned forward.
"You attended these?"
"People change their minds."
"I was supporting my wife."
I placed one card beside his plate.
"You sat next to me while I asked why we weren't conceiving. You'd already had a vasectomy."
Elaine stared at him.
"A what?"
Mason's chair scraped backward.
"I was supporting my wife."
"Shannon, this isn't the place or time."
"You made every room the place when you told them my body was the problem."
Mason looked at Misha.
She slid printed messages onto the table.
"He didn't just let us believe it. He wrote the story himself."

His hand closed around the tiny socks.
Mason looked at Misha.
Mason dropped them into the box.
"This has gone far enough."
"It went five years too far."
He reached the printed messages. His eyes moved across the first page, then snapped toward Misha.
"You gave her these?"
"She deserved to know what you said about her."
"You gave her these?"
"I never said she was infertile."
"You didn't have to," I said. "You told them I had bad medical news, let them pity me, and used their silence to protect yourself."
Elaine read the message twice.
"Is any of this true, Shannon?"
"No doctor ever told me I couldn't have children."
Robert faced Mason.

"You didn't have to."
"Did you ever want them?"
Mason looked down.
"No."
"Then why marry a woman who did?"
"I loved her."
"Love doesn't excuse this," Robert said.
Mason turned to me.
"I loved her."
"I thought you'd change your mind."
"You never gave me that choice. You had a vasectomy, watched me track dates, and let me believe my body was failing."
"I was scared you'd leave."
"You were right."
Mason stared at me.
I pointed to the last envelope.
"You were right."
"Open it."
He pulled out the divorce papers.

"You filed?"
"Yes."
"You planned this behind my back?"
"I made one decision about my life after discovering you'd made five years of decisions for me."
"We can still talk about this, Shannon."
"You filed?"
"We did. You just never told the truth."
I stood and lifted my overnight bag from beside the door.
Mason followed me into the hallway.
