On Sunday, I cooked roasted chicken, potatoes, and Robert's favorite green beans with almonds. Mason walked into the kitchen while I checked the oven.
"What's the occasion?"

"Family dinner."
He kissed my cheek. I stepped aside.
"Are we okay?"
"We'll talk after everyone arrives."
The doorbell rang before he could press me.
Elaine hugged me. Robert handed Mason a bottle of sparkling apple juice.

"Why not?"

"We're being careful."
Mason saw what she assumed and said nothing.
Misha arrived last. She hugged me, then looked at Mason.

Elaine touched my hand.

"Mom, Shannon doesn't like discussing the medical side of our marriage."

I pulled my hand free.
"Actually, I'd like to discuss it tonight."

"What is this?"
"It's the past five years. Open it."
He lifted the lid and found the baby-name notebook.
"What is this?"
Elaine leaned closer.
"You showed me that three Christmases ago. You told me you'd chosen Benjamin."
Mason glanced at me.
"We were just talking."
"We were planning. Keep looking, Mason."
He pulled out the paint samples.
