Nighttime absences without any explanation
As the weeks went by, I began to notice something unusual. Every night, with absolute regularity, Elena left the apartment at precisely midnight. Without explanation, without fuss. Just a few words whispered before the door closed: "I'll be back in the morning."
And she vanished into the darkness.
She would reappear before dawn, sometimes exhausted, sometimes with rumpled clothes. I never asked her any questions. Instinctively, I felt that this silence belonged to her. One night, I found her sitting on the edge of the bed, her two children huddled against her, their faces buried in their hair. A scene suspended between worry and overflowing love. When she saw me, she simply smiled: "Thank you for coming early."
That was all her.
Two years that felt like a real family
The months flew by. Luca and Mira grew up to the rhythm of mornings scented with warm milk and shared laughter before bedtime. Without really realizing it, this little family had become an indispensable part of my life.
Then Elena told me she was leaving. She hugged me tightly, her eyes shining with emotion: "I'll never know how to thank you." I thought our story ended there. Three days later, two police officers knocked on my door.
