Security tried to remove me from the hospital – a few minutes later, they apologized on their knees.

"Stay where you are! You have no right to be here!" shouted a security guard, standing in front of me.

"Get out of the way!" said another.

"NO!" I yelled. "My daughter is in there!"

"Stay where you are! You have no right to be here!"

"Sir! Your hands! Get away! You're covered in dirt!" shouted a nurse, her face tense.

But I didn't care!

My boots pounded loudly on the ground, still covered in black dust from my work underground.

But none of that mattered. Gracie needed me.

Three hours earlier, I had just left my post at the mine.

I had worked 16 hours straight in the dark. I was putting on clean clothes when my supervisor, Hank, approached. I saw men lose their fingers and emerge calmer than Hank as they walked towards me.

He didn't say much. He just handed over his phone.

On the screen was a message from Gracie's nurse: "Father wanted at the hospital. Emergency. His wife has been in an accident."

He didn't say much.

"Elias... your wife did not survive," said Hank.

My heart stopped.

"No... no, we spoke on the phone this morning," I said. "She said she was going to the hospital to see Gracie..."

"She didn't make it to the hospital," Hank said softly. "They tried, Elias. I'm sorry."

"Elias... your wife didn't make it."

I remember grabbing my coat and running. I didn't even take off my boots.

When I arrived at the hospital, the entrance hall looked like a war zone.

Voices echoed in the corridors. People in white coats and blue coats moved with determination.
