Security tried to remove me from the hospital – a few minutes later, they apologized on their knees.

I didn't wait for him to say anything else.

We stayed there for a long time under that maple tree, right next to the stone that marked our greatest loss.

I held him in my arms while he cried, and I cried with him.

When he finally withdrew, his eyes were red and swollen, but the tension in his jaw had disappeared.

"Am I in trouble?"

I sighed. "Well, you've missed a lot of class, Frank. We're going to have to hold a big meeting with the principal to talk about your absences. And you're going to start seeing the academic advisor."

He grimaced.

I held him in my arms while he cried, and I cried with him.

"An advisor? Everyone will know."

"This isn't a punishment." I reached out to brush a hair off his forehead. "It's help. For both of us. We've tried doing this on our own, and clearly, it doesn't work."

He looked at the tombstone one last time. "I truly thought I was helping. I thought that by making everything perfect, you wouldn't have to suffer anymore."

"Oh, darling," I said. "Losing him has always been painful. You can't fix the heartbreak by pretending he's not there. All you do is make it worse."

"We tried to do it all by ourselves, and clearly, it doesn't work."

As we walked back towards the cemetery gate, I realized that I had been so focused on my own survival that I hadn't noticed my son was trying to save me.

He wasn't "strong" because he was doing well. He was strong because he thought I was too weak to bear his pain.

We still have a long way to go, but when we walked through those doors, I felt a weight lifted from both of us.

Keeping a family together doesn't mean you have to control everything. Sometimes, it means finally letting your child put down the burden.
