On Our First Family Vacation, My Husband Refused to Let Me Go into One Locked Bedroom — His MIL Later Handed Me the Key

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then quietly walked toward me.

When he reached the door, he wrapped his hand around the key.

"I wanted to tell you."

"Then why didn't you?"

His fingers tightened.

"Because every time I tried...I couldn't."

I searched his face.

"This isn't another family, is it?"

"No."

"A child?"

"No."

"Then what are you hiding?"

His shoulders sagged.

"I'm not hiding someone. I'm hiding the worst day of my life."

Silence settled between us.

Finally, he turned the key the rest of the way.

"If you're going to see it, I'd rather show you."

He slowly pushed the door open.

The room looked as though someone had stepped out only moments earlier.

A neatly made twin bed.

A white dresser.

A bookshelf overflowing with children's novels.

Horse figurines lined the windowsill.
