Before I answered, Kobe noticed them.
His smile faded.
But he didn’t hide.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Can I talk to her?”
“Only if you want.”
I nodded.
Sailor slowly walked over while Mom remained near the doorway.
She held out the paper bag with trembling hands.
“I’m sorry.”
Kobe looked at me briefly before returning his attention to her.
She continued softly.
“Dad told me it would be funny. He said you always got more attention than me. I wanted the console.”
Kobe touched the new crown resting on his head.
“You made everyone leave.”
“I know.”
“My knee hurt.”
“I know now.”
He hesitated.
“Did you get the console?”
“No.”
Sailor opened the paper bag.
Inside was a handmade paper crown covered with silver stars and far too much glue.
“I know you already have one,” she said. “I made this before I knew the park made another.”
Kobe studied it carefully.
Then he looked back at her.
“I don’t want you at my party today.”
