“Lily’s pediatrician documented that most of her medical appointments were attended by her mother.”
Daniel looked away.
“And that Mr. Whitaker missed twelve scheduled appointments.”
The room went quiet.
Patricia whispered, “That’s not true.”
Rachel turned another page.
“It is documented.”
Then she placed the final paper down.
“And there is one more thing.”
The judge frowned.
“What?”
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“Lily told the court-appointed evaluator that she was afraid to tell her father when her mother became sick.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Because I had never asked Lily to say anything.
I had never wanted her involved.
But my little girl had been watching.

Daniel stood suddenly.
“This is ridiculous.”
Judge Hanley looked at him.
“Sit down, Mr. Whitaker.”
For the first time, Daniel obeyed.

“Temporary custody arrangements will be suspended pending further investigation.”
Patricia’s face went pale.
Daniel looked at me.
