My husband used to leave every Saturday at 7 a.m. to coach his deceased friend's 8-year-old son, but when the boy slipped me a note, I collapsed.

I never wanted you to know, because it would only have hurt you.

I couldn't breathe.

"That's why he gets angry sometimes," Leo said softly.

I looked up, trying to compose myself for his sake.

"Angry? When is he angry, Leo?"

"When Mom doesn't reply to his texts right away. Or when she says he can't stay when he's driving me home."

My stomach twisted into a hard knot. "What texts, honey?"

Leo hesitated.

"What texts, honey?"

"He says he checks on Mom while I'm with him. That it's what Dad would want. But he gets a scary look on his face when she doesn't call back."

A cold, furious clarity settled in my chest. No wonder Leo seemed so anxious around Mark! He knew from the start that my husband had ulterior motives.

"Thank you for showing me that, Leo. You were very brave. Do you want me to take you home now?"

He nodded quickly. The relief on his little face was so obvious that it hurt me to see it.

As I guided him towards my car, I had a bad feeling. How would Sarah react when I showed her this note?

No wonder Leo seemed so anxious in Mark's presence!

Sarah's smile faded when she saw that I had brought Leo home instead of Mark.

"Hey, what's going on? Where's Mark?"

"Can we talk? In private."

She frowned. "Uh, sure. Leo, why don't you go watch TV?"

Leo rushed into the corridor. As soon as he was out of sight, I handed him the folded letter.

"Leo saw Mark put that in David's coffin. He took it out before they buried him."

Sarah turned pale as she read the lines.

Sarah's smile faded when she saw that I had brought Leo home instead of Mark.

"What is this..." His hands began to tremble violently. "Did Leo give you this? Did he read it ?"

"I'm afraid so. Perhaps he didn't understand the nuances, but he clearly knew it was a secret he wasn't supposed to know. He knew it was wrong."

"Oh my God." She looked nauseous. "All those Saturdays. All those 'checkups.' I thought he was just being nice, even if it was a bit much. But now... I think I'm going to be sick."

Sarah closed her eyes for a long time. When she opened them, the tears were still there, but there was something more stable and harder behind them.

"He knew it was wrong."

"He will never come near my son or me again," she said.

"I think it's better this way."

She took my hand. "I'm sorry. This is... this is unbelievable. You're his wife. You deserve so much better than this. Thank you for bringing Leo home. And for telling me the truth."

"You needed to know. We both needed to know."

The journey home felt like a countdown. Mark was waiting for me when I walked through the door.

"He will never come near my son or me again."

"Where were you?" he asked. "I tried to call you, but you left your phone here."

I held up the folded letter. The change in him was instantaneous.

"Where did you get that?" he asked, his voice now just a low hiss.

"Leo took it from David's coffin."

"I never crossed the line," he stammered. "Even now, I've never touched her, I've never said a word..."

"You've crossed a lot of lines," I added. "You mentored a grieving child so you could stay close to their mother. Do you have any idea how twisted that is?"

"Where did you get that?"

"It's not fair!" Mark broke down. "I was here for Leo! I'm the only one who came!"

"You were there for yourself! You were there because you hoped a vulnerable widow would finally see you the way you wanted to be seen. You weren't honoring David. You were trying to replace him."

The silence stretched between us, thick and ugly. Mark looked at me, and for the first time, I didn't recognize him at all.

"I already told Sarah," I said in a low voice.

And that's when he broke down.
